Succession Research

Joe Biden: He is a junior from having the same name as his father and he was born November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He grew up with 3 other siblings in his family. He attended and graduated from the University of Delaware and then also attended Law school. Joe Biden became one of the youngest people to ever be elected to the United States Senate. Right after this election, his wife, Neilia, and their 1-year old daughter, Naomi, were killed in a tragic automobile accident that also left their two sons in critical condition. Later on he ended up marrying Jill Jacobs who has a Ph.D in Education and has been teaching for over two decades. Joe is now the father of three children and the grandfather of six. He has been the Senator of Delaware for 36 years and is a leader that everyone can look up to.

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton was born on October 26, 1947 and is now serving as the 67th United States Secretary of State. She has been a former first lady since her husband Bill Clinton was once a president. She had a dream to become a lawyer so she attended Yale Law School to achieve her dream. She has been the first lady to ever join many organizations on of them including the first female representative to represent the state.  In the 2008 Presidential Nomination Race, Hillary Clinton won more primaries and delegates than any other female candidate in American history, but then lost to our president Barack Obama. She has been a lady who has almost achieved presidency and is one of the most important women in the world. She will still be working to help women become more powerful for years to come.

The Role of the Presidency

http://www2.smumn.edu/deptpages/~instructtech/institutional_planning/role_president.htm
This website says that the president is the primary sponsor and initiator of the strategic planning effort. It also says that the president provides executive leadership. The president is also the chief spokesman for the United States.

http://dawn.thot.net/board_chair.html#1
This web page indicates that the president ensures that the Board operates as a team. They say that his main role is being a leader. This does not mean that the president runs the organization but ensures that the president makes sure that the Board gets things done in an efficient and effective way.

http://usgovinfo.about.com/cs/agencies/a/presbrief.htm
This web page states that the president is the administrative head of the executive branch of the Government. It says that the president shall hold office for a term of four years. The president can make federal laws that cover a wide range of matter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States
The president of the United States comes into play during the law making process. The president can veto a bill that is brought to him but the bill may still become a law even after his veto. So this states that the president isn't the only person who makes the laws, the houses do.

Economy Assignment

With the help of your textbook and Ch 23, please explain the differences among capitalism, socialism and communism.   Then explain the pros and cons that each hold.
Capitalism is usually called a free enterprise system in which is characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods. One advantage to capitalist countries is that the people benefit from companies who are in competition. In competition companies will compete to provide there customers with quality and low prices. One disadvantage would be a monopoly. Monopolies are usually uncommon anymore but they can still happen. A monopoly occurs when only one company sells a product and they can set the price to that product however high they want to.

Socialism is an economic and political philosophy based on the idea that the benifits of economic activity-wealth- should be equitably distributed throughout a society. One advantage is that everyone is supplied with basic needs, such as medicare. A disadvantage would be that socialist countries have a tendency to develop too many layers of bureaucracy. This complicates decision making and then there are too many unpredictable events.

Communism is calls for the collective ownership of land and other productive property. One advantage to communism is that the laborer of a product makes all the money, so if you made a product then you receive all the money. The disadvantage would be that the Communist Party holds the decision-making power in both the government and the economy.

Ch 22 Foreign Governments

1.  Pick two countries in Chapter 22 and provide an in depth paragraph on their government and how it operates.
Great Britain has somewhat of an unwritten constitution. Britain use to run as a monarchy governement, but now the queen has restrictions on what she can do. They also have a prime minister who is in control of the House of Commons. There government is divided into regional and local governments. The national government of China is composed of the National People's Congress and the State Concil. The judicial system deals with crimal and civil cases. Taiwan has broken away from Chinas government.

2. What are some of the similarities of the countries that are in Chapter 22?
They both have local governments. They are both becoming more democratic.

3. What are some of the differences of the countries that are in Chapter 22?
Britain has parts of a constitution written in books and China has a constitution. China has a communist party.

4. Which country in Chapter 22 do you believe has the strongest government and why?
China because they have a CCP which is made up of 58 million members and is the largest political party of the world.

Brits Borrowing from American Political Playbook

The British have now adapted to the American Politics by holding the debates for prime minister on television. It seems to have advantages for some candidates. Brown was behind Cameron in the polls and agreed to debate to try and up himself in the polls.

I think that it is a good thing to show the debates on television. It gives the people more information on how the candidates want to change the government. It also may help out the candidates to win over in the polls because of their success in a debate.

Great Britain and US

One of the similarities between the two governments is that we both branched off the same government to start with. Also like America they have a regional and local government that work together.

With the similarities there are also many more differences between the two governments. One difference is that the British constitution is still unwritten, America bases laws off of the constitution. Another difference is that Britain has a monarchy government in which a king or queen rules instead of a president.

Update on Bills

The first bill that I chose to write about was the House Bill 1017. This bill wants to authorize the release of offender photographs and physical description for purposes of victim and community notification. This bill has passed through both the House and the Senate and was delivered to the Governor on February 8, 2011.

Senate bill 17 wants to provide for a property tax exemption for certain property leased by the Science and Technology Authority. This bill has also been passed through the House and Senate and was also delivered to the Governor for his signature on February 8, 2011.
